176th anniversary of Texas Declaration of Independence Celebration set

WASHINGTON, Texas - Historical re-enactors portraying Texas heroes Col. William B. Travis, Gen. Sam Houston and Davy Crockett will help lend an authentic air to the Texas Independence Day celebration March 3-4 at Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site.

'The Ice Palace' ice skating rink returns to Festival of Lights

HIDALGO – Gliding over the ice and under the lights in Hidalgo during the Festival of Lights is a fun way to enjoy the Christmas season. Back by popular demand, the "Ice Palace" is open through Jan. 1. It is located at the Memorial Park Pavilion, 710 8th Street, Hidalgo.

Kingsville Inksville features variety of prints made in unique way

KINGSVILLE  – Currently on display in the Ben Bailey Art Gallery at Texas A&M University-Kingsville are a number of prints made in an unusual way. No normal press was used to make these prints although they were pressed, literally. During the recent Artwalk in downtown Kingsville, prints made on large wooden blocks were pressed on paper using a steam roller normally reserved for construction or road work.

Walking in the Footsteps of History

Virginia is loaded with history, or at least sites where history happened. On a recent trip, filled with serendipitous moments, we visited the Williamsburg/Jamestown/Yorktown historic triangle, entering from the Virginia Beach area where the first chance happening occurred.

"Backyard Habitat Steward," New Program at Quinta Mazatlan!

Have you been wanting to attract more wildlife to your yard but you're not sure where to start? Start at Quinta Mazatlan! This fall, Quinta Mazatlan is kicking off the brand new Backyard Habitat Steward program. Participants will receive 15 hours of classroom and hands-on training -and will be encouraged to design a small wildscape in their own backyard. Quinta Mazatlan staff are working with local experts to present a program on creating great spaces for wildlife.

VANCOUVER: The city with everything

Traveling to Vancouver, British Columbia, we decided to make it a little more fun by flying into Seattle, taking a bus up to Vancouver and train back down at the end. Being a train afficionado this proved a wise decision. Not only did it save us over $300 and a lot of time, it gave us a relaxing way to start and finish a vacation. But on to the adventure! Arriving in Vancouver, we took a taxi to the Granville House B&B, a half block from a local bus stop, very convenient as we took local transportation everywhere, bypassing a rent-a-car.

Allegiant approved to operate B-757 aircraft

Building holds fascinating piece of McAllen’s history

It stands empty now. Dust balls float lazily across the floor. Shimmers of light sneak through the windows. Spiders scamper across the bare concrete floors. 609 W. Bus. 83 — originally known as 609 Highway West — waits hopefully for its next tenant.

Local salt lake has rich history

EDITOR's NOTE: Visitors to the salt lake and other federal properties should take note, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, that it is a crime to remove property or artifacts that you may come across. Wardens do patrol and ticket for this.
