EDINBURG The late artist Victor Alvarez has been spotlighted in Edinburg this month. His works were featured at the city's monthly Jardin del Arte event and are now on exhibit at the Dustin Michael Sekula Memorial Library through Jan. 5.

A reception was held Dec. 21 with his family members Elizabeth Gearheart and Mary Cloud on hand to share memories of Victor, an artist, philosopher and poet who overcame many physical limitations to create an impressive body of work in his short time here with us. Before his death in August 2010, Victor completed his Bachelor's degree in history from the University of Texas-Pan American, graduating magna cum laude.

UTPA art teacher Leila Hernandez, instrumental in organizing the art show, was also on hand to share memories of her student.

A catalog of Victor's artwork has been assembled to accompany the exhibit and is on sale with proceeds going to purchase art supplies for students who can't afford them.

The library is located at 1906 S. Closner Blvd., Edinburg. 956-383-6246.
