EDINBURG – The Dustin Michael Sekula Memorial Library would like to invite the public to a special commemorative ceremony honoring Edinburg’s Fallen Heroes. This special ceremony will take place on Tuesday, May 31, at 10 a.m.  Join us as we include the name of Lance Corporal Derek Hernandez to our “Forever In Our Hearts” Commemorative Wall.

Lance Corporal Derek Hernandez was born in Edinburg on October 17, 1989 to Mrs. Virginia Reyna and Mr. Israel Hernandez.  He attended Edinburg High School where he played football for the Bobcats and graduated in 2008.

That July, right after graduation, Derek joined the Marine Corps.  During his time in the Marines, Derek received the National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.  Derek was killed at the age of 20 while defending our country in Helmand Province, Afghanistan.

Also joining us on that day will be Ms. Dolia Gonzalez, mother of Sgt. Alfredo “Freddy” Gonzalez, and the families of Army Spc. Mark Anthony Zapata and Lance Cpl. Dustin Michael Sekula.

Please join us for this special event as we honor and remember our fallen heroes.  Also honored will be all of those who have served our country, giving their lives for our freedom and rights.  Their courage and sacrifice will be forever in our hearts.
