Futuro McAllen has scheduled an informational meeting on Tuesday from 5:30 to 7 p.m. regarding the City of McAllen's effort to take over Hidalgo County Water District No. 3. it will be held at South Texas College's Cooper Center.
Legislation has been introduced in the Texas Legislature in Austin that would allow the City of McAllen to take over the operation of Water District #3. State Representative Veronica Gonzales has introduced a bill (HB 1828) in the Texas house and State Senator Juan 'Chuy" Hinojosa has introduced a similar bill (SB 987) in the State Senate. Hearings will have been held on both bills before the House and the Senate Committees.
The panel is scheduled to include:
PRO: McAllen Mayor Richard Cortez, Ernie Williams (PUB) and Mark Freeland.
CON: Othal Brand, Jr., Glen Jarvis and a District #3 Farmer (to be named).
Monica Stewart will serve as moderator.
Organizers say the Tuesday night hearing will offer a unique opportunity to hear informed speakers tell the public why it makes sense for McAllen to take over the water district or why it does not make sense. The public will have the chance to give written questions to the moderator to present to the participants after they have given their reasons for being pro or con on the bills.
