McALLEN The City of McAllen will have live music, a laser light show, fireworks and it's famous ball for it's New Year's Eve bash that will take place downtown.

McAllen Police Chief Victor Rodriguez, the chair of the NYE bash committee, knows that NYE is a special day for people all over the world and he mentioned that he wants to make sure it's special for not only McAllen residents but also people from all over the Rio Grande Valley and Northern Mexico.

"We are in our final preparations for our New Year's Eve bash that we host in the City of McAllen downtown," he said. "It's become an annual event and we're prepared to host tens of thousands of people."

The event will have four live bands performing outside the downtown parking garage at the corner of 15th street and Beaumont Street from 7 p.m. to midnight. The bands are a mix of genres and include ACHE, Marshall Law, In and Out and Del Castillo.

The concert is free and a free park and ride shuttle service on Metro McAllen public transit buses will be provided to and from the McAllen Convention Center and the McAllen Civic Center from 6 p.m. Dec. 31 and 4 a.m. Jan 1. The buses will drop off passengers on Business 83 between Broadway and 15th Street. Metro McAllen buses departing form the McAllen Civic Center will drop off passengers on Bicentennial Boulevard between Beaumont and Chicago. For more information about the park and ride service call 956-681-3510.

"It's the third time we are having this service," Liz Suarez, transit director said. "It makes it easier to access downtown, it's safer and it's free."

The NYE bash event zone will be inside the boundaries of Business Highway 83 and Dallas Ave. and Bicentennial Blvd. and Broadway. The City of McAllen will post a map of scheduled parking and street closures on its city websites. Vehicles parked illegally will be towed.

"The bus shuttle service will be really important because we are going to have a lot of road closures," Eduardo Mendoza, director of transportation said. "Those road closures will go on until Jan. 1 so if you want to make this event more enjoyable use the bus system."

Concessions and novelty booths will be available on 16th Street between Chicago Avenue and Austin Avenue. Vendor spaces may be reserved while available by calling the Heart of the City at 956-686-4357.
