Our beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Mrs Maria B. Gonzales, age 92, was called home by the Lord on Wednesday, January 14, 2009. She is the last survivor of the Samuel and Eulalia (Cerda) Bentancur family. Mar├-a was a very giving and loving person, who participated and worshipped at the Sacred Heart Catholic parish in the city of Edinburg.
During WW II she taught at Sacred Heart Catholic School while her husband was away in Germany fighting for our Country. She was a volunteer for the March of Dimes as a block and area mother during the 1940's and 1950's. She was an example to her children in giving of herself to others in service. She was never too busy or too tired to help when she was needed. One of her sayings was, "Do everything as if it was Jesus you are doing it for" She always stressed the importance of an Education to her children and of giving back to the community.
She is survived by her husband, Trinidad R. Gonz├íles of Edinburg, five children, Juan Antonio "Tony" (Hilda) Gonz├íles of Edinburg, Irma (Arturo) Gomez of McAllen, Trinidad (Sylvia) Gonz├íles, Jr. of McAllen, Norma (Domingo) Lopez of Edinburg and Sylvia (Adri├ín) Guerra of Edinburg, 11 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
Visitation was held Thursday & Friday, January 15 & 16, 2009 at Skinner Silva Funeral Chapel on West Sam Houston in Pharr. Mrs. Gonz├íles was then be taken to Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Edinburg where a Holy Rosary will be recited at 7:00 pm on Friday, Jan 16.
Funeral Mass was celebrated at 9:00 am, Saturday, January 17, 2009 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Edinburg. Interment followed at Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery in Edinburg.
Pallbearers were Trinidad Gonz├íles, Lelando M. Gonz├íles, Marco Antonio Gomez, Martin Jaime Gomez, Juan Negrete, Jr., Roberto Garza, Juan Pablo Ybarra, Carlos David Lopez, and Adri├ín Alberto Guerra.
She loved her grandchildren and always encouraged them in whatever they strived for in life. She has left a legacy of her faith in the Lord and love of thy neighbor. Mar├-a will be greatly missed by all her family and friends that loved her.
Funeral services were entrusted to the care of Skinner Silva Funeral Home.
