KINGSVILLE – Outstanding students and organizations at Texas A&M University-Kingsville were honored recently for their service to the university during the annual Student Leadership Awards Banquet.
Jacqueline Casas, a sophomore communication sciences and disorders major from Edinburg, received the Outstanding Student Organization Member Award, one of the highest honors given. With her honor comes a $250 Presidential Scholarship. She is a member of Delta Phi Epsilon and was selected as a new resident adviser.
The Emerging Leader Scholarship was given to Sabrina Romo, a sophomore marketing major from Lyford. This award is presented to a student who has not yet held a major leadership role in a recognized student organization, but will be in the coming school year. With this award comes a $250 Presidential Scholarship and a $200 scholarship to be used toward a leadership development opportunity. Romo has been active in the American Marketing Association and Theta Phi Alpha.
The Outstanding Leader Award was given to Justin Martinez, a senior psychology/sociology major from Pharr. This award is presented to the student who best exemplifies what it means to be a true leader. Martinez is a member of the Campus Activities Board, Psi Chi, Alpha Kappa Delta and was a Javelina Camp Pack Leader. He earned a $1,000 Presidential Scholarship.
The Outstanding Greek Man of the Year was Emmanuel Guadarama, a senior biology major from Illinois, and the Outstanding Greek Woman of the Year award went to Victoria Martinez, a senior architectural engineering major from Moore.
Guadarama served the Inter-Fraternity Council and has served as vice president and president. He organized events including Greek Games and the new tradition Greek Splash. He is a member of Omega Delta Phi.
Martinez rose to the rank of vice president of the Collegiate Pan-Hellenic Council and ran the Greek Week festivities. She was president of her own organization, Delta Phi Epsilon.
The final individual award went to Rebeka A. Silvas, as the Outstanding Student Organization Advisor. Silvas is director of retention services for University College and is advisor to Alpha Sigma Alpha.
