PSJA ISD dedicates Marcia R. Garza Elementary in Alamo

ALAMO – Marcia R. Garza lived a life of service to her family, her students and her community. She served as a teacher, counselor and principal at PSJA ISD for over 30 years, her last 13 years as principal of Garza-Peña Elementary before retiring in 2004. Three years later in 2007 at the age of 56, she passed away after a two-year battle with cancer.

VMHS receives college readiness recognition

MISSION – Veterans Memorial High School (VMHS) has received the 2011 College Readiness Award from the Texas ACT Council for increasing the number of students taking the ACT assessment over the past five years and significantly increasing their level of achievement and college readiness. In a letter to VMHS Principal Leticia Pena, ACT Texas says about 10% of the high schools in Texas have been able to accomplish this. The Texas ACT Council is comprised of secondary and postsecondary educators who advise ACT, Inc. on the utilization of ACT programs and services in Texas schools and colleges.

McALLEN – A small wooden car speeds down a high school hallway as a cluster of teenagers watch, intent on gauging the velocity and strength of impact as it slams against a far wall. They run to pick it up and peer at the iPod Touch strapped atop the car to measure the acceleration, angle, and speed of the object. They then use the data to create a graph on an excel spreadsheet. It's the beauty of physics and technology, intertwined.

Green living, green careers, green business

On Friday and Saturday, Oct. 7 and 8, business students from South Texas College participated in the Green Living Festival at the McAllen Chamber of Commerce. The festival focuses on organizations and businesses concerned about improving our impact on the environment. Participants in the festival included glass jewelry artists that use recycled glass, a surface coating business that uses recycled tires, and an organization that rehabilitates and adopts out dogs. The Greenforce Initiative and STC sponsored a booth at the festival as well.
