EDINBURG – The Edinburg CISD Central Administration Boardroom was the site of a Panel Discussion that brought together school superintendents, community and county leaders, state lawmakers, law enforcement officials, and parents to discuss viable options to address firearm safety around schools.
EDINBURG – Robert R. Vela High School Principal Eva Torres has announced that Robert Barfield will be the school's first Assistant Fine Arts Director.
McALLEN – IDEA Public Schools announced they will host a Teacher Job Fair on Thursday, Feb. 23, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the McAllen Convention Center.
MISSION – Some of the Mission CISD (Consolidated Independent School District) Destination ImagiNation (DI) students have elected to try and make a difference in the world around them through their competition projects. They have decided on a projectOUTREACH team challenge.
MISSION – Students from The Veterans Memorial FFA Chapter did very well at the recent Texas Citrus Fiesta Youth Show.
MISSION – Both the junior and senior citrus judging teams from the Mission FFA had a very successful day during the recent Texas Citrus Fiesta judging contest. Both teams earned first place in their divisions.
MISSION – After starting with a field of 35 competitors, it took over an hour to whittle that number down to one person who is this year's top speller in Mission CISD (Consolidated Independent School District).
MISSION – Fourteen students from the Veterans Memorial High School (VMHS) DECA organization are advancing to compete at the state level. They earned the right to compete at state through their strong performance at the recent district conference.
MISSION – The Veterans Memorial High School (VMHS) HOSA organization will be well represented at the state HOSA competitions this year. Ana Hernandez is advancing in the clinical nursing competition. Rubi Adame qualified in nurse assisting.
ALAMO – Marcia R. Garza lived a life of service to her family, her students and her community. She served as a teacher, counselor and principal at PSJA ISD for over 30 years, her last 13 years as principal of Garza-Peña Elementary before retiring in 2004. Three years later in 2007 at the age of 56, she passed away after a two-year battle with cancer.
PHARR – Frank Smith Toyota will be giving away another car this year to one lucky student for their performance in academics in high school.
MISSION – As Mission CISD (Consolidated Independent School District) eighth graders begin their pre-registration process over the next few weeks, for the jump to high school, they will have a new choice. District officials are planning to kick off a new Early College High School program this fall, beginning with the graduating class of 2016.
MERCEDES – South Texas Independent School District (STISD) will open enrollment for the 2012-13 school year on Monday, Feb. 13.

EDINBURG – Hidalgo County Commissioners’ Court approved an interlocal agreement between Precinct 4 and Edinburg Consolidated School District to provide for the construction of a protective barrier around Carmen Avila Elementary and Harwell Middle Schools.
EDINBURG – In an effort to help new teachers prosper in their profession, The University of Texas-Pan American will host a conference Saturday, Feb. 11.
