WESLACO STC's Latina Student Organization hosted its first Latin@s and Advanced Degrees lecture at the college's Mid-Valley Campus on Nov. 22.

In attendance were more than 90 students, staff and faculty who came to hear the struggles and triumphs of two local Latinas - Suzanne Villalon-Hinojosa who, after graduating from Weslaco High School, attended Princeton University and now heads her own law firm and Linda Cavazos Castillo, assistant district attorney for Hidalgo County, who graduated from Mercedes High School. Each speaker has a sister who also holds an advanced degree and is a professor at South Texas College.

The Latin@s and Advanced Degrees series will continue in the spring. Future guests include a veterinarian, investment banker, orchestra conductor and more. If you have a friend or colleague who would like to share his or her experience on the path to earning advanced degrees contact Laura Steinert at 956-447-6619.
