MISSION - Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Hidalgo County Executive Director Mrs. Linda Gonzalez and Volunteer Coordinator Gabriel Salinas, accepted 30 gifts for teenagers in the CASA program given by Sharyland High School (SHS) Family and Community Service Class taught by Mary Jane Laing in the Career and Technology Program.

Laing was invited by CASA Board Member Darlene Jamison, who is also a counselor at Jessie L. Jensen Elementary of Sharyland ISD, to assist in donating Christmas Gifts for teenage children who have been abused and are in foster care from Hidalgo County. Jamison requested the gifts for the annual CASA Christmas Party that was held Dec. 4. The community came together to provide food, games and gifts for the children who attend Hidalgo County schools for this annual party.

The two Family and Community Service classes brought 30 wrapped Christmas gifts for either a teenage boy or girl that they purchased from their own money. The classes teamed up into pairs to purchase one gift with a value of $10. The student pairs drew names for either teenage male or female to know what gift to provide.

On Thursday, Dec. 1, the classes traveled to Jensen Elementary to give the gifts to the Executive Director Gonzalez and Volunteer Coordinator Salinas and Board Member Jamison.

Gonzalez expressed appreciation for the SHS class's efforts to help those in need and hoped that this would be the beginning of their benevolence activities to help others. Class member Paola Garza expressed how much this made her appreciate her family after listening to what other teenagers have to endure and was very happy she helped.
