EDINBURG – With the electricity pulsating like a flashing comet all night, it came down to execution, and for EHS, hustle, clutch shooting and deadly marksmanship at the line made the difference. Oh, and there was also the triumphant Return of Milo!
She's been highly touted from the start of her EHS career, and along the way, Amy Avila has found that there is a yin and a yang to being pretty good at everything. The senior high-jumper paced the field at the McAllen Invitational over the weekend, but will miss the upcoming Cats Relays due to a prestigious cheerleading competition in Dallas.
After failing to convert a steady series of chances in regulation and overtime Tuesday, surely the Lady Cougars would be able to gain the shootout win against Pharr North, a rugged club with little offensive punch.
Is softball more intense than the other sports, or does it just feel like it in town, due to the simmering rivalry between schools and the rabid packs of families following the girls?
It's playoff time for the Bobcats, and even though their long streak of district titles came to and end this year, they head into the postseason once again, intent on showing Brownsville Porter what Bobcat Pride is all about.

EDINBURG – By the time you read this, North might already be on the court down in Brownsville, fighting the crazy crowd in that tiny bandbox along with the hometown Hanna Eagles. The Cougars (19-14) drew Hanna in the bi-district round for Monday and it's always tricky to win down at the Eagles' Nest.
WESLACO – IDEA Public Schools is proud to present the first ever Top Shot Tournament which will take place on Saturday, Feb. 18, at 8:00 a.m. at the Lozano Shooting Range in San Manuel. The tournament will raise funds for IDEA Public Schools, a growing public charter school system with 20 schools across the Rio Grande Valley.
EDINBURG – Edinburg High School graduate Michael Salinas has been named Robert R. Vela High School's first Athletic Director.
It wasn't due to lack of effort that the Lady Bobcats were knocked out of the playoff hunt Tuesday. The 54-48 home loss to Harlingen South was more a case of not making key shots and failing to stop penetration by the Lady Hawk guards. But whatever the root cause was, Edinburg will stay home from the playoffs for the first time in 12 years.
They both came in thinking they were better than twin 0-3 league records indicated, and both proved it Friday night. EHS rallied from a down first half to tie the Lady Jags up and eventually prevail in overtime, finding the energy and team concept after Econ played inspired soccer the whole first half to lead, 1-0.
Not a good week for the ‘Cats but a super one for the Jags, and North holding serve in the basketball race. After Friday's action, EHS and Econ were tied for the last playoff spot at 8-5 with a game to go.
EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American volleyball team announced Monday that their co-ed 6 vs. 6 volleyball tournament will be held on Sunday, Feb. 26 at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
EDINBURG – Their goals for the game, like for the season: play as a team and get Tricky Vicky some help. And though they did not end up winning the bi-district game Monday against visiting Weslaco, the Lady Cougars accomplished their goals.
EDINBURG – The girls basketball playoffs are here, and now the competition gets fierce. When the North girls, 19-14, welcome the Pantherettes of Weslaco to town Monday night for a bi-district clash, they will be in against a foe that ranked third in the Valley in wins (29) and came in No. 8 in the latest poll.
