EHS 21, ECON 6

It looks like Edinburg wants to make the playoffs!

The Bobcats dominated Econ over the weekend, holding the Jags to 140 total yards and overcoming three fumbles to win, 21-6 Friday.

With the victory, EHS is 3-1 in District 31-5A and 4-3 overall, with three games left. The ‘Cats got a touchdown pass from Stevie Guerrero to Steve Trevino and led 7-6 at the half after blocking a PAT, something that has become a specialty the past few weeks.

The defense shut out the Jags (1-3, 3-4) in the second half and gave some breathing room when senior DB Jeremy Salinas picked off a pass and ran 54 yards for a 14-6 lead. The play marked the tean’s third defensive TD of the year.

Edinburg continued to find balance on offense, with Jaime Sauceda picking up 69 yards and Guerrero hitting 50 percent of his passes without a pick. Meanwhile the Bobcat O churned to another solid effort; the unit has not rushed for fewer than 170 yards in a game this season.

The Jags’ offensive woes continued, as they got just 140; they’ve averaged only 178 yards for the last three weeks. The Bobcat D has allowed 279 yards a game this year, best in the city and third in 31-5A.

Next up for surging EHS (winner of four of five) is a stern test at home Thursday against Pharr North (4-0, 7-0), at 7 p.m.
