MCALLEN HIGH 17, EDINBURG 14

MCALLEN — It was a heartbreaking loss for the Bobcats, as McAllen High completed an 80-yard touchdown pass with 2:09 to go for a 17-14 win at McAllen Memorial Stadium Thursday.

The Bobcats had driven 73 yards in 10 plays behind backup QB Stevie Guerrero to take the lead on a 16-yard TD pass to Steve Trevino, with 4:05 to go. After holding the Bulldogs (1-1), Edinburg got the ball back but failed to gain a first down, handing the ball back to McHigh. Austin Griffith found All-Valley end Nick Garza for the bomb that won the game, down the left sideline.

Edinburg (0-1) got 105 yards rushing from senior Rolando Palacios but lost him to an injury late in the game. Starting QB Isaac Escobar was also hurt, suffering a hip contusion in a hard hit near the end of the first half. Status on those two important cogs of the offense is up in the air, as the Bobcats look to a home game this Friday against Sharyland.

EDINBURG — The Jags lost two leads against the defending 31-5A champs, allowing a 20-play drive in the fourth quarter to lose a thriller, 33-28 Friday.

Rudy Villarreal tossed three touchdown passes in the first half as Econ (1-1) led 21-7 at one point in the second quarter. One came on a 71-yarder to trackman Danny Garcia.

But Memorial rallied to take the lead with 20 straight points, to lead 27-21 early in the fourth.

The Jags, who host Brownsville Lopez Saturday night at Cats Stadium, took the advantage back on a 5-yard scamper from Villarreal at 10:49, but the Mustangs (1-0) marched 79 yards to get a 1-yard TD blast with less than a minute to go.

Outstanding defensive efforts were turned in by safety Andrew Fox (19 tackles and a touchdown catch) and junior Victor Salinas (also 19 tackles).

SHARYLAND 24, NORTH 10

MISSION — The Coogs trailed 17-0 before getting on a roll to score 10 points, but a late 52-yard touchdown pass off a fake punt ended the comeback effort.

North (1-1) struggled on offense, gaining just 242 yards, with senior QB Matt Munoz (183 yards rushing, 40-yard TD) the main threat. Munoz was just 1 of 8 passing while fellow senior Raul Monsevais was 5 of 9.

Sharyland (2-0) got a pair of TD runs from Scottie Meyer and a field goal to lead by 17 at the 5:08 mark of the second period. After Munoz’ run and a 33-yard field goal from Allan Guajardo, his second of the year, it was 17-10 at the half.

The Coogs now look to a road game against La Joya (1-1) Thursday at 7, in the final non-district contest of 2009.
