It was a grueling week for the RGV Heat, but the results were worth it.
The select softball team coached by Kevin Knipe traveled to Beaumont and spent almost a week in the Golden Triangle area, braving rainouts and competition from 27 teams to take home third place in a prestigious regional tournament.
The Heat were well represented with local talent, including EHS Lady Bobcats Sammy Arciba, Tori DeLeon and the Hinojosa girls, Leeanne and Myranda, plus North standout Vanessa Salazar. They lost to the defending national champ from Oklahoma but battled their way back to get third overall.
Rainouts spoiled the party for the first three days, and the tournament bypassed pool play and went straight to brackets, meaning the Heat had four games on Saturday. It was an Independent Fastpitch Softball Association event that drew teams from across the South and some from as far away as California.
