District play is near as the city schools finish their preseason work and get set for the kickoff games Saturday afternoon.

Right now, Economedes has the best record in town at 10-4, after sweeping Valley View three straight Saturday. The Lady Jags got effective scoring games from Lory Martinez and Val Perez, plus 11 assists from Kayla Longoria, as they look to a 31-5A opener at Pharr North this weekend.

EHS (6-6) lost to Edcouch-Elsa in four games Saturday, the teamís third loss in its last four tries. Freshman Myranda Hinojosa had 14 assists for the Lady Bobcats against E-E, while senior Andrea Solis came on for nine kills. EHS starts league play with a chance against P-SJ-A Memorial, whom it lost to two weeks ago in a tournament.

Meanwhile, North was 7-5 coming out of the weekend, after a home loss to a strong Rowe team Saturday, in three. Laura Torres continued her fine libero play with 28 digs, while Brandy Garcia, seemingly recovered from a health scare in late August, contributed 10 kills for the Lady Cougars. North gets Harlingen at home Saturday, with all league contests set for noon.
