Itís back to work as the city teams finished their off week in preps for the District 31-5A opening bell. North will try to rebound from a 0-3 start against a talented P-SJ-A squad on the road Thursday while Econ (2-1) travels to Harlingen to battle winless South.

Coming off the bye, North hopes to get starting quarterback Michael Pacheco healthy after an ankle injury has kept him out of the last six quarters of football. Backup Ruben Cavazos led the team from a 21-0 deficit to a near win on the road against Donna in the teamís last action, and if he is called upon, has shown that he has what it takes to run the team.

Northís problems right now are injuries and turnovers, but the bottom line is, the teamís record is actually 0-0, as in no district losses.

The Bears will present a difficult obstacle no matter who the QB is, because theyíve started the year 2-1 with wins against Los Fresnos and McAllen High but a loss last weekend to Memorial. As usual, P-SJ-A is big and strong, with a patient running game and some horses on defense. In the recent past, the matches between these two have been important and fantastic, with North winning in 2009 on a last-second touchdown pass.

Meanwhile the Jags are off to a 2-1 beginning with Wís over McAllen Rowe and Brownsville Lopez, and a loss to McAllen Memorial. Senior slickster Nelson Hampton has been every bit as explosive as advertised, with five touchdowns and 421 yards from scrimmage so far.

Teammate Edgar Cuevas has been impressive at quarterback, with five scoring balls so far and a 61.9 percent completion rate. The offense has come up with some big plays, including Cuevasí three TD strikes in a 28-10 win at Lopez two weeks ago.

Coming off the bye week, Econ and Hampton may be able to put some big numbers against a South defense that had allowed an amazing 60 points per game in a 0-3 start. The Orange D allowed just 191 yards to Lopez in its best effort of the season, after getting gouged for 410 in the loss to Memorial.

After this week, North is at home against P-SJ-A Memorial Thursday, Sept. 30, while the Jags travel to face P-SJ-A the next night.
