McALLEN – One-hundred-two golfers on 34 teams gathered for the annual Mayor's Cup Golf Tournament at the McAllen PalmView Golf Course last weekend to raise scholarship dollars.
The teams played a modified Florida scramble, 18 hole game for the purpose of providing funds for the annual Top 25 high school banquet held at the end of the school year. The yearly banquet provides a $1,000 scholarship for each of the top 25 graduates from McAllen's three high schools.
The Mayor's Cup Golf Tournament was started by former McAllen Mayor Leo Montalvo as a scholarship fund raiser. The golfers see it as a win/win situation. The students get their scholarships and the golfers get a good day on the links.
The top four scoring teams are:
1st place: Manuel Garza II, Manuel Garza III & Danny Rodriguez
2nd place: Rene Tapia, Eddie Monroy & Jimmy Salazar
3rd place: Javier Moreno, Carlos Talancon & Sergio De Pamfilis
4th place: Jim McGurk, Jesse Villegas.
