OREM, Utah – The University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA) Lady Broncs (13-17, 8-4 GWC) fell to the Utah Valley University (UVU) Wolverines (9-22, 3-9 GWC) 72-56 in the semi-finals of the inaugural Great West Conference (GWC) Women’s Basketball Tournament at the McKay Center on the campus of Utah Valley University.

Freshman guard Bianca Torre led the Lady Broncs with 22 points, followed by seniors Rose Esther Jean chipping in 14 points and Aleeya Grigsby adding 11 points.

Five players for the Wolverines recorded double figures and were led by the GWC’s highest scorer, Julie Smith, with 20 points.

The Lady Broncs were on top throughout the first half of the contest, with their largest lead by a 15-point margin with 4:05 left on the clock. They entered halftime with a 10-point lead 31-21.

However, the Wolverines came back fighting in the second half, taking control of the lead with 8:02 on the clock and never let go.

“This was my first year at UTPA. I can’t say enough about the kids I inherited. There is not a kid on the team that I recruited. We started the season 0-8. Had we won today, we would have tied the school record for most wins in a season. I really want to congratulate my seniors. They bought in to what we were doing the second semester. If you could see the tears in those eyes in that locker room, you would understand the passion that those kids have played with all year long,” head coach Denny Downing said.

The championship game of the GWC Women’s Basketball Tournament featuring No. 1 University of North Dakota and No. 6 UVU will take place Saturday at 5 p.m. (CT) at the McKay Center.
