The Amarillo Dillas, after finishing in third place in the regular season, have topped the San Angelo Colts three games to two in the final playoff round to successfully defend their United League Baseball championship.

The Dillas defeated the Colts 7-3 Tuesday night in San Angelo to take and defend their title.

In the championship series, the Dillas first downed the Colts 8-2, but the Colts lambasted the Dillas in the second game by a 12-4 margin.

The Dillas rebounded to take the third game, played at San Angelo, by 4-3. The Colts won the fourth game10-8, when Nick Mahin, with two outs and behind with two strikes in the bottom of the ninth inning, hit a three-run home run over the left field fence.

The Dillas, two and a half games behind San Angelo with a 44-35 record in the regular season, sidelined the second place Edinburg Roadrunners (46-34) in the league’s first round of the playoffs.

The Roadrunners won the first game, 6-2, then the Dillas took 14-2 and 12-11 (in 10 innings) wins to get into the final round.

The Colts, 48-32 in the regular season, defeated the Coastal Bend Thunder 3-0 and 4-2 to get into the title round.

The Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings just missed making the playoffs, finishing with a 39-41 record. The Laredo Broncos were last with a 23-57 mark.
