The city is prepared to send nearly three dozen athletes to the regional meet in San Antonio, after a solid showing at the District 31-5A meet April 15-17.

Five locals will be competing in a pair of individual events: Alma Chavez of North (high and long jump); Nelson Hampton of Econ (long and triple jump); Northís Jenyse Vazquez (800 and 3200); Northís Luis Serrano (3200 and 1600); and Econís Leigha Brown (triple jump and 300 hurdles).

The going is about to get a whole lot steeper for the area kids, and we shall see if any of them have what it takes to advance to state like Jag Gavino Galvan last year in the pole vault.

One veteran who seems to have a shot is Serrano, Northís distance king, who probably has a better opportunity in the shorter race, in which he is about four seconds off the pace that should be set at San Antonio. In the 3200, Jacob Benn of SA Stevens has run a 9:29.84 this year, while Serrano clocked in at 9:44.62 in the district meet.

As for Hampton, the junior star has a shot in the triple jump after notching a PR of over 44 feet at the district competition. This is the third-best jump of those going to regionals.

She went to state in cross country in the fall and now Vazquez has her sights on duplicating that feat this spring. In the 800, she hit 2:21.32 to win district, and the girls up at regionals as a group run at about 2:20, including Valley leader Katie Norman, who won the 30-5A event with 2:20.82. It will be a tough for Vazquez in the longer run, as the best 3200 time among regional foes is a swift 11:34.07; she is about at 12 minutes flat.

Econ enjoyed great relay success at the 31-5A finale, and will send all three boysí baton groups north. The sprint relay is always a difficult hill to climb for the Valley considering the superior speed up north. In the 800 relay, the Jags clocked 1:30.71, with SA Johnson the favorite this time at 1:27.94. Econís 1600 team is seven seconds off the top regional pace.

Another Jag, freshman Brown, made 46.87 in the long hurdle run, and ironically her toughest competition will come locally from 31-5A rival Zoraya Noyola, who is two seconds faster, and Sharylandís Kayla De la Pena, also a few clicks ahead in the 44s.
