EDINBURG – South Texas Fighting Champions David Fuentes III, Danny Salinas and Frank Trevino were recognized on Tuesday Dec. 6, with a proclamation from the Edinburg City Council.
The South Texas Fighting Championship has three title belts, which are held by these three fighters, all from Edinburg.
Fuentes is currently the STFC 145 pound Champion Belt Holder. He moved to Edinburg at the age of 7 and has called Edinburg home ever since. He started his self defense training in 1994 and is currently an active Martial Arts Volunteer Instructor for the City of Edinburg Parks and Recreation Department. His accomplishments include being recognized by the Texas Karate Association as a one time State Champion, the youngest Martial Artist ever to be crowned Grande Champion in Karate and the only fighter in the Rio Grande Valley to hold two Championship Belts for the STFC Professional Cage Fighting. He says he owes his success to the Edinburg Parks and Recreation Department and all they have to offer, his instructor Martin Martinez and most importantly to God. He adds, "I'm glad to represent my city all around the world. I have been to Germany, fought in Canada, fought all over the world and I always represent Edinburg. I still come back home and I want to continue to be the Champion for Edinburg and for the children who are growing up here to show them that we have something to offer here in Edinburg and that Champions can be built here."
Trevino is currently the STFC 185 pound Champion Belt Holder. He is a native of Edinburg and began his training in 2000. He is the Rouge Mix Martial Arts instructor for the City of Edinburg Parks and Recreation Department and is a Maui Tai Fighter Specialist. Trevino has been recognized by the Maui Tai Federation as a Champion and is a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He says. "The City of Edinburg has been really good to me, I went to school here and I try to do my best for the kids that come by and train with me and try to give back as much as you all give me." He is currently undefeated. He thanks Martin Martinez and everyone who has supported him from the beginning including David Fuentes III and Danny Salinas adding, "We all help each other out we are like one big family and that's what Edinburg is, one big family."
Salinas is the STFC 155 pound Champion Belt Holder. He began training in 2000 and is an active Martial Arts Volunteer Instructor for the City of Edinburg Parks and Recreation Department. He holds an International Rank of Black Belt Third Dan in the Art of Karate, is a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and is a professional boxer. Danny Salinas was unable to attend Tuesday's meeting because he is currently in Las Vegas, Nevada trying out for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), the most prestigious fighting league in the world.
