EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and Director of Athletics Chris King today released its annual report for the 2010-11 academic year. The report documents a variety of achievements and initiatives that were accomplished by UTPA student-athletes, coaches, and administrative staff during the previous year. The report includes successes in athletics, academics, and community initiatives.
"This past year was a strong one for UTPA Athletics, and I hope others share our pride in the Broncs," Director of Athletics Chris King said. "As this annual report shows, our Bronc student-athletes competed well athletically, excelled on our campus academically, and were active in the community."
In addition to establishing numerous school records and enjoying Great West Conference recognition, the Broncs once again maintained academic performances that exceeded the marks of the general student body at UTPA. Specifically, the Annual Report highlights a Federal Graduation Rate for Bronc student-athletes 17 percent higher than the rate for the general student population.
"The success of our student-athletes illustrates our mission of providing a broad-based intercollegiate athletic program that complements the educational mission of the institution," King added. "The Broncs are leaders on our campus and in our community, and we are very proud of how well they represent both."
The Annual Report also lists the progress that has been accomplished following the roadmap of the three-year departmental Strategic Plan that was unveiled in October 2010. This progress includes internal improvements in the areas of compliance, academic services, operational and fiscal procedures, and facilities.
Dramatic improvements on the external side of the department over the past year include revenue generation from increased corporate sponsorships, private and special event fundraising, and ticket sales. UTPA Athletics also improved its branding and visual stature with updated Bronc logos and word marks, the retooling and re-launch of its website, http://www.utpabroncs.com, the establishment of online merchandise and ticket sales, and a departmental apparel and footwear agreement with Nike Team Sports.
"This past year established a solid foundation for UTPA Athletics across a broad spectrum and opened the door for great success in the future," said King. "I hope the achievements and accomplishments of our Bronc student-athletes and UTPA Athletics that are listed in the 2010-11 Annual Report inspire others to join our Bronc Family and help us continue to build a premier NCAA Division I athletic program."
