OREM, Utah – The University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA) men’s basketball team (5-26, 4-8 GWC) travels to Orem, Utah this week to compete in the inaugural Great West Conference (GWC) Basketball Championship March 10-13 at the McKay Center on the campus of Utah Valley University.
The Broncs are the No. 5 seed and will face the No. 4 Utah Valley University (UVU) Wolverines on their home court in the first round of the tournament Wednesday, March 10 at 3:30 p.m. (CT).
UTPA and UVU split the season with each team winning on its home court, but the Wolverines lead the all-time series 7-1. The Broncs head into the tournament coming off of a 71-68 win at the University of North Dakota last weekend, while the Wolverines fell to Seattle University 74-64 in their final match.
“They [UVU] have been a team that has built a very strong reputation year in and year out. They are extremely difficult to defend. They give you too many looks to prepare for offensively so you just have to do a good job of sticking to your defensive principles, and our offensive execution is going to have to be at the top of our game,” head coach Ryan Marks said.
If the Broncs advance in the tournament, they would take on No. 1 University of South Dakota (USD), which enters the semi-finals on a bye.
“There is no rhyme or reason as to why teams sometimes peak this time of year, but you’re always trying to build toward that, and I think that we have played some of our best basketball in the past week. Our two games at South Dakota and North Dakota were very good performances by our guys. We played at a high level relative to how we have played all year so that gives us some good momentum and confidence going into this game,” Marks said.
