The Econ Jags began the 2009 season with a road win at Brownsville Porter, taking out the Cowboys 20-13 behind a pair of touchdowns from junior Nelson Hampton.

After Gary Rodriguez got the scoring going with a 4-yard run, Hampton returned a punt 55 yards to make it 13-0 early. The Jags added a 6-yard Hampton carry to lead 20-0 at the half before Porter came back with 14 in the second half.

The Wrecking Crew Defense turned in a solid effort at Sams Stadium, allowing just 154 total yards. Now the Jags look to their home debut Friday against McAllen Memorial, last year’s District 31-5A co-champ.

Meanwhile, Edinburg begins the campaign Thursday night over in McAllen against the McHigh Bulldogs, a team that will seek to rebound from a 59-20 loss to Harlingen in the opener. The Bobcats looked good in defeating Los Fresnos in scrimmage action last week, and will try and keep the momentum rolling against the ‘Dogs, a playoff combatant in 2008.
