GRAND FORKS, North Dakota - The University of Texas-Pan American baseball team split a doubleheader with the University of North Dakota on Thursday afternoon at Kraft Field. The Sioux (9-32) won the first game 3-2 in seven innings and the Broncs (20-28) took the second half of the doubleheader 8-7 in 11 innings. The Broncs saw their losing streak extend to 12 games and end on Thursday.

In the first game A.J. Franco (L, 3-3) allowed just three earned runs in the six inning complete game loss. Franco allowed five hits without a walk and a strikeout. Sam Anderson (W, 2-6) picked up the win after giving up one run on five UTPA hits with one walk and no strikeouts. Cory Baker earned his third save after picking up the final two-outs in the seventh.

The Sioux scored all three runs in the bottom of the second inning and held on for the victory. Kris Kwak led off the UND half of the third with a double to the gap in right-center. He scored as the next batter up Zack Trygstad singled to center to make the score 1-0 Sioux. Four batters later with two-on and two-out, Andy Sadler drove in two more runs on his double down the right-field line to put UND up 3-0. That is all the offense of the opener for North Dakota.

The Broncs rallied for a single run in the sixth inning to pull within two runs. With the bases loaded, Angel Ibaņez reached on a fielders choice, scoring Brandon Roush from third to make the score 3-1.

In the seventh, the Broncs were in need of a pair of runs to tie the game. Colton Van Komen came up with a man on second and two-out and singled to right field to score Roger Bernal pulling the Broncs with a run at 3-2. After an Andy Fortuna walk, the Broncs had the tying run in scoring position and go-ahead run on at first. Adrian De La Rosa grounded out to end the game with two-on and two-out.

In the second game the Broncs rallied from five runs down to take a one-run lead in the eighth inning. The Sioux rallied for a run in the ninth to send the game into extra innings, before losing in 11.

With the Broncs trailing 6-5 in the eighth, UTPA would tie the game on an Alex Carnall's RBI single to right-center, scoring Roush from second base. After two straight hits loaded the bases, Vinnie Mejia's sac-fly scored Carnall to give the Broncs their first lead of the game at 7-6.

In the ninth, the Sioux had runners at the corners with one out when Jake Magner hit a sacrifice fly to right to knot the game up at 7-7.

In the eleventh, the Broncs got the go-ahead run across thanks to an error and wild pitch from UND. A one-out single put Mike McCarthy aboard for Bernal. His single advanced McCarthy into scoring position. The junior catcher advanced to third on a throwing error, and he crossed home plate thanks to a Cory Baker wild pitch.

Cody Plunk (W, 2-5) picked up the win in relief pitching in the final six innings lowing two runs on four hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Baker (L, 1-4) took the loss in relief with only the un-earned run in the 11th allowed on four UTPA hits. He walked one and struck out three in 3.2 innings of work.
