EDINBURG -- The University of Texas Pan American baseball team completed the sweep of the Chicago State University Cougars with a 16-15 victory in extra innings Sunday afternoon at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. The Broncs are now winners of four in a row.
The Broncs (13-10) got on the board in the bottom of the first against Albert Carpen. Alex Carnall led off with a walk and then Brandon Roush followed with a walk too. Angel Ibanez then followed with an RBI single scoring Carnall giving the Broncs the 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the second, Adrian De La Rosa extended UTPA’s lead with an RBI single to right center field that allowed Jason Webb to score from second making it 2-0.
Chicago State (4-21) tied the game at two in the top of the third with a two-run home run by Weston Lewis.
A fielding error to start the bottom of the third allowed Ibanez to reach and then another error allowed him to move to third base. Two outs later, Stuart MacInnes hit an RBI single to left field scoring Ibanez from third. Webb followed with a single putting runner at first and third. The third error of the inning allowed MacInnes to score and Webb to move up to third. Roger Bernal then hit an RBI single scoring Webb from third extending the Broncs lead to 5-2.
Miguel Camacho led off the top of the fourth with a walk and then moved to third on a single by William Hill. A throwing error allowed Camacho to score cutting UTPA’s lead to 5-3.
The first three hitters of the bottom of the fourth reached against Carpen and then Vincent Mejia walked with the bases loaded driving in Carnall from third. Mike McCarthy then hit a two-run single scoring Roush and Ibanez from second and third. MacInnes then followed with an RBI single that allowed Mejia to score extending the Broncs lead 9-3.
A two-run triple by Camacho in the top of the fifth inning that scored Lewis and Jonathan Carpen cut the Broncs lead down to 9-5.
The Broncs responded in the bottom half of the fifth by scoring five runs on five hits. Ibanez, MacInnes, and Webb highlighted the inning with RBI singles and at the end of the fifth the Broncs led 14-5.
In the bottom of the sixth, Webb led off with a single and then came into score on an RBI double by MacInnes giving the Broncs the 15-5 advantage.
The Cougars then responded with 10 unanswered runs where they scored four in the seventh, two in the eighth, and four in the ninth tying the game at 15.
In the bottom of the 10th, Roush hit a one-out single and then came around to score the game-winning run on Mejia’s RBI double giving the Broncs the 16-15 victory.
Guadalupe Barrera picked up the win after pitching a scoreless 10th for his first win of the season.
The Broncs hit the road as they travel to Corpus Christi to face the Texas A&M Corpus Christi Islanders on Tuesday night with the first pitch scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
