EDINBURG The University of Texas-Pan American women's basketball team and head coach Denny Downing today unveiled the schedule for the 2011-12 UTPA Broncs women's basketball season. This will be the third season with Downing at the helm of UTPA women's basketball.

The Broncs will host an exhibition game at the UTPA Fieldhouse versus Texas A&M Kingsville on November 4th. They will then travel to face 2011 NCAA tournament qualifier The University of Miami for their regular season opener on November 11th. The first regular season home game for the Broncs will be on November 18th against in-state rival Texas State.

The Broncs will play a tough non-conference road schedule that includes two Big XII opponents, Nebraska (Dec. 4th) and Oklahoma State (Dec. 18th). The Broncs will also face off against in-state powers UTEP (Nov. 22nd) and TCU (Jan. 5th).

"This is one of our toughest schedules that we have had in our three years here, with only 11 home games and 16 road games, UTPA women's basketball head coach Denny Downing said. "This should create a very challenging opportunity for us, but with a senior laden team we should be up for the challenge."

The Broncs will compete in two "Classics" during their non-conference schedule. The first will be hosted the University of Houston during Thanksgiving weekend beginning on November 25th. The second will be on the campus of the University of Texas-San Antonio in the UTSA Classic.

The home schedule includes several notable games. The Broncs play three consecutive home games beginning on December 7th when they host Southland Conference foe Texas A&M Corpus Christi. On December 10th the Broncs host Stephen F. Austin with a special 4:30 PM tipoff, and the Broncs wrap up the homestand on December 14th when they host Huston-Tillotson with a 7PM start.

The 2011-12 season will be the third in the Great West Conference for the Broncs. UTPA will begin conference play on January 19th when they host Chicago State University. After hosting NJIT on January 21st the Broncs will have their longest road stretch of the season as they play five consecutive GWC games on the road. The Broncs close out the regular season with a three game homestand with games against North Dakota (Feb. 23rd), Utah Valley (Feb. 25th), and Houston Baptist (Mar. 3rd).

The 2012 Great West Conference Championship Tournament will be hosted by Chicago State University and will begin on March 8th.

The Broncs return a veteran squad poised to compete for the Great West title. They are led by junior guard, and Harlingen, TX native Bianca Torre and anchored by senior point guard Erin Lewis, and senior forwards Donna and Re-Shawndra Jackson. Senior three-point specialist Ce'Monay Newell, who broke UTPA's single-season record for three-point field goals, also returns for her senior campaign. In total the Broncs have 12 upper classmen on their 2011-12 roster.
