EDINBURG -- The University of Texas Pan American baseball team extended their win streak to a season high six games after defeating the New Jersey Institute of Technology Highlanders 14-7 Friday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

UTPA (15-10, 5-0) have score 10 or more runs in four of their last five games and remain unbeaten in Great West Conference play.

The Broncs got the scoring started in the bottom of the first. Roger Bernal and Angel Ibanez had back-to-back singles and with two outs Mike McCarthy drove them in with a two-run triple down the right field line giving the Broncs the 2-0 lead.

The Highlanders (6-20, 0-5) responded in the top of the second against Michael Zouzalik. Jeff Peterson hit a one-out double to left center field and then moved to third on a single by Bryan Bleakley. With runners on the corners, Tyler Kapp hit an RBI fielder's choice that allowed Peterson to score making it 2-1 UTPA.

In the top of the second, Colton Van Komen reached on a one-out walk and then stole second base. Adrian De La Rosa then followed with an RBI single that allowed Van Komen to score extending the Broncs lead 3-1.

A couple of errors by the Broncs defense in the top of the third allowed Matt Weckerle to score cutting UTPA's lead 3-2.

Roger Bernal led off the bottom of the third with a single then moved to third on a throwing error by the Highlander's defense. With runners at second and third, Vincent Mejia hit an RBI single that scored Bernal from third. McCarthy then followed with an RBI single down the right field line scoring Angle Ibanez from third. After Stuart MacInnes hit into a fielder's choice, a throwing error allowed Mejia to score from third. One out later, Van Komen hit an RBI single to right field that allowed MacInnes to score extending the Broncs advantage to 7-2.

NJIT fought back in the top of the fifth. With two outs and a runner at third, D.J. Roche hit an RBI single to right field bringing in Matt Tomczyk. Peterson then followed with a single that put runners at first and second. Bleakley then hit a single to right field but a throwing error to home plate allowed Roche to score. John Bouck drove in two more runs with a single to right center field allowing Peterson and Bleakley to score making it 7-6 UTPA.

Back-to-back walks to Alex Carnall and Bernal started the bottom of the sixth for the Broncs. Ibanez then hit an RBI double to right center field that allowed Carnall to score from second. With runners at second and third, McCarthy hit a sacrifice fly allowing Bernal to score extending the Broncs lead to 9-6.

In the bottom of the seventh, Richard Bandrich led off the inning with a double to deep left center field. Two outs later, Carnall hit a two-out RBI double scoring Hernandez from second giving the Broncs the 10-6 edge.

An RBI ground out by Weckerle in the top of the eighth allowed Kapp, who led the inning off with a single, to score cutting the Broncs lead to 10-7.

UTPA added four more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Mejia had an RBI single that allowed Ibanez to score from third. With runners at second and third, Bandrich hit a two-run single to right center allowing Mejia and McCarthy to score. Carnall capped the scoring in the inning with a sacrifice fly that allowed Bandrich to score making it 14-7 Broncs.

Zach Zouzalik pitched a scoreless ninth giving UTPA the 14-7 victory. Austin Casas (1-0) picked up the win after pitching an inning and a third of scoreless baseball and striking out one.

The Broncs and Highlanders continue their four-game series with a double-header at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. Game one begins at 1 p.m. and game two will start 30 minutes after completion of game one.
