EDINBURG -- The University of Texas-Pan American baseball team swept the double-header from Centenary College with scores of 11-0 and 10-3 Saturday evening at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. The Broncs are now winners of three straight.
In game one, The Broncs got the scoring started in the bottom of the third. With two outs, Adrian De La Rosa singled to center field and then moved to third on a throwing error by the pitcher. Tom Sicking followed with a walk and a stolen base to set the stage for Alex Carnall who hit a two-run single to right field giving the Broncs the 2-0 lead.
UTPA (8-8) added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth sending 11 batters to the plate. With runners at first and second, Mike McCarthy hit an RBI single to center field that allowed Colten Van Komen to score from second. A single by Roger Bernal loaded the bases for De La Rosa who then hit a three-run double making it 6-0 Broncs. One out later, Carnall hit an RBI triple scoring De La Rosa from second. Angel Ibanez then hit an RBI double scoring Carnall from third making it 8-0. Vincent Mejia capped off the scoring with an RBI single to right center field that allowed Ibanez to score extending the Broncs lead to 9-0.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Broncs added to their lead. Ibanez hit an RBI single with the bases loaded that allowed Brandon Roush to score from third. Mejia then followed with a sacrifice fly that allowed Andy Fortuna to score making it 11-0 UTPA.
Troy Green pitched a scoreless ninth giving the Broncs the 11-0 victory.
Zack Zouzalik (1-0) got the win in game one after pitching three innings of scoreless baseball and allowing just one hit.
In Game two, the Broncs (9-8) got the scoring started in the bottom of the second. Roger Bernal reached on a double down the right field line and then came into score on an RBI single by Adrian De La Rosa giving the Broncs the early 1-0 lead.
Alex Carnall got hit by a pitch to start the bottom of the third and then one out later Vincent Mejia singled to third. One out later, Mike McCarthy hit a two-run triple that allowed Carnall and Mejia to score extending the Broncs lead 3-0.
In the bottom of the fourth, De La Rosa led off the inning with a double and then moved to third on an infield single by Tom Sicking. With runners on the corners, Angel Ibanez hit an RBI ground out to second bases that allowed De La Rosa to score from third making it 4-0 Broncs.
The Gents (2-12) finally got on the board in the top of the fifth against Michael Zouzalik. With the bases loaded and two outs, a fielding error allowed two runs to score for Centenary. RJ Talamantes followed with an RBI single to left field that allowed Marc Martinez to score cutting the Broncs lead to 4-3.
UTPA added to their lead in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single by MacInnes that allowed Carnall to score from second making it 5-3 Broncs.
In the bottom of the seventh the Broncs added to their lead with five runs on five hits. With runners at first and second, Sicking smashed an RBI double that allowed Andy Fortuna to score from second. Carnall followed with a two-run double that allowed Bernal and Sicking to score. Stuart MacInnes then hit a two-run single that allowed Carnall and Ibanez to score extending the Broncs lead 10-3.
Jonathan Sa pitched a scoreless top of the ninth to give the Broncs the 10-3 victory and the double-header sweep.
Zouzalik picked up the win after pitching six innings and allowing three runs, none of which were earned, and striking out one.
The Broncs hit the road to Texas Christian University for a two-game series in Fort Worth, Texas starting Tuesday April 5th. UTPA comes back to Edinburg Baseball Stadium Friday April 8th for a four-game series against conference opponent Chicago State.
