EDINBURG -- The University of Texas Pan American baseball team swept the double-header from the Chicago State University Cougars with scores of 5-3 and 11-6 Saturday evening at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.  The Broncs are now winners of three straight and remain unbeaten in Great West Conference play. 

The Cougars (4-19) got on the board in the top of the first with an RBI double by Tony Sanchez that allowed Jonathan Carpen to score from first base giving Chicago State the early 1-0 lead.

Alex Carnall hit a one-out ground rule double to start the hitting in the bottom of the third for the Broncs (11-10).  Brandon Roush followed with an RBI single into center field scoring Carnall from second tying the game at one.  After moving to second on the throw to the plate, Roush came into score on an RBI single by Angel Ibanez giving UTPA the one run lead.  Vincent Mejia followed with a walk and then Mike McCarthy hit an RBI single that allowed Ibanez to score from second.  Stuart MacInnes hit a two-run double off the left field wall to cap the scoring for the Broncs giving them the 5-1 lead. 

Chicago State added runs in the top of the fifth and seventh innings but Jonathan Sa, who got his first save of the season, closed out the ball game giving the Broncs the 5-3 victory.

Michael Zouzalik (3-1) picked up the win after pitching six innings and allowing two runs on four hits and striking out three. 

In game two, it was the Broncs (12-10) who got on the board first as Mike McCarthy hit an RBI single to center field that allowed Angel Ibanez to score making it 1-0.

The Cougars (4-20) answered back in the top of the third as they got two straight hits to start the inning.  Albert Carpen followed with a bunt single but a throwing error allowed William Hill to score tying the game at one.  Michael Carpen then followed with an RBI single that allowed Ryan Malhotra to score from third.  Jonathan Carpen then hit a sacrifice fly scoring Albert Carpen from third giving Chicago State the 3-1 advantage.

UTPA responded right back with a run of their own in the bottom of the third off of Gregory Day (1-3).  Angel Ibanez hit a one-out triple to left field and then came into score on a sacrifice fly by Vincent Mejia making it 3-2 Cougars.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Broncs sent nine hitters to the plate scoring five runs on five hits.   UTPA got five straight hits in the inning including an RBI double by Ibanez and a two-run double by Mejia helping make the score 7-3. 

The Broncs extended their lead to 8-3 in the bottom of the sixth on a RBI ground out by Mike McCarthy that allowed Ibanez to score from third.

Jack Bobillo led off the top of the seventh with a single and two outs later came into score on a fielding error to cut the Broncs lead in half at 8-4.

Adrian De La Rosa hit an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh that allowed Iradier Hernandez to score.  Alex Carnall followed with a sacrifice fly allowing Roger Bernal to score from third.  With one out, Ibanez, who went 4-for-5 with two RBIs, hit an RBI ground out driving in De La Rosa from third extending UTPA’s lead to 11-4.

Chicago State added single runs in the eighth and ninth innings but Hayden Daugherty got the final three outs of the game giving the Broncs the 11-6 victory.

Jonathan Delgado (2-1) picked up his second win of the season after pitching six and two-third innings and allowing three runs on nine hits and striking out three.   

The Broncs and Cougars will complete their four-game series with the fourth game Sunday afternoon at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.  The first pitch is scheduled for noon as UTPA looks to complete the sweep of Chicago State and remain unbeaten in Great West Conference play.
