FORT WORTH -- Texas Christian center fielder Aaron Schultz's two run single in the bottom of the third inning off of Texas-Pan American starter Kyle Kotchie would provide all the run support needed as the Horned Frogs knocked off the Broncs 5-1 Wednesday night at Lupton Field. The loss is the second straight for UTPA.
The Broncs (9-10) for the second straight night had trouble scoring runs off of Horned Frog pitching. UTPA scored a single run, their only one of the two game series, on six hits.
The Frogs (20-9) had difficulty scoring in the early moments of the game. Kotchie retired the first six TCU batters, and faced the minimum through the first 2.2 innings of work. Kotchie then hit TCU catcher Jimmie Pharr and gave up a bunt single to Brance Rivera before allowing Schultz's two run single. TCU led 2-0 after three innings.
The Frogs scored their third run in the fourth on a Zac Jordan RBI single which scored Jacon Coats from second base. TCU led 3-0 after the fourth.
The Broncs scored their only run of the game in the top of the fifth inning. Shortstop Brandon Roush hit a two-out single up the middle and came around to score on an Adrian De La Rosa double to make the score 3-1 TCU.
The Frogs added single runs in the fifth and sixth to push their run total to five for the game. TCU tallied seven hits while the Broncs tacked on six hits in the losing effort.
TCU starter Nick Frey (W, 1-0) picked up the victory allowing only three hits in his four innings of work and striking out two. Kotchie (L, 0-2) took the defeat pitching 4.1 innings and allowing four runs, three earned, with four strikeouts.
The Broncs return home on Friday as they begin Great West Conference play with a four game series against Chicago State University. Game one of the series is Friday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium with a 6:00 PM first pitch. The series will continue with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1:00 PM and a single game Sunday at noon.
