HOUSTON – The University of Texas-Pan American women's volleyball snapped their five-match losing streak Friday night with a 3-0 (25-20, 26-24, 25-14) win over Texas Southern at the TSU Health & Physical Education arena.
The Broncs jumped out to an 11-4 lead in the first set after a kill by Sarah Davis, which led to a Texas Southern timeout. Diara Reynolds extended the Broncs lead to 15-7 with a kill. The Tigers climbed back in the set with some errors by the Broncs but Maria Kliefoth recorded a kill that made it 21-14 UTPA. Texas Southern cut the lead down to four but Michelle McNamee's kill gave the Broncs the 25-20 first set victory.
In the second set, the Tigers jumped out to the early lead after a kill by Britaniey Moore that made it 5-4. Texas Southern then extended their lead after an Ashley Mason kill that made it 10-7. The Broncs fought back to tie things at 14 with a kill by Michelle McNamee. A kill by Sarah Davis gave UTPA the 16-15 lead but the Tigers tied things up at 18 on an error by the Broncs. Texas Pan American then picked up the final points of the match to take the second set 26-24.
In the final set, UTPA grabbed the 6-1 lead after a block by Maria Kliefoth and Michelle McNamee. Kliefoth added a kill that pushed the Broncs lead to 12-7. Diara Reynolds extended the Broncs lead to 18-8 with a kill and then Klieftoth recorded another kill that made it 21-11. McNamee closed out the set and the match with a kill giving the Broncs the 25-14 third set victory.
Maria Kliefoth led the Broncs with 12 kills and added three digs. Diara Reynolds, Sarah Davis and Michelle McNamee each recorded nine
kills apiece. Shauna Miller paced the offense with 26 assists while also adding four kills. Juri Franzen led the defense with 15 digs. Ijanae Holman and Kristi Garcia chipped in six digs each.
For Texas Southern, Mona Reed led the way with 11 kills and also adding four digs. Sarah Wooten and Courtney Dixon each added eight digs while Wooten paced the offense with 22 assists.
The Broncs will close out their regular season Saturday afternoon against Houston Baptist at Sharp Gym. The match is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.
