It was a nice day Saturday for area volleyball teams, with three straight-set sweeps. North took out Pharr North, EHS defeated a hot P-SJ-A squad, and Econ bested Harlingen.
The Lady Coogs lead the league at 5-0, 20-6 while Econ, now 3-2, 15-10, has won three in a row. EHS is (2-3, 15-10).
Tuesday the Lady Jags got back into the race with a comeback win against EHS at home, winning two in a row after an 0-2 start and taking out the LadY Bobcats 15-12 in the clincher.
Econ got 33 kills and 15 blocks from junior star Leigha Brown and contributions from Noemi Garza (11 digs, 15 assists), Kenia Gonzalez (14 assists) and Yvette Garza (16 assists). Senior Rachel RodrigUez, hampered by an injury, added 10 kills as the Lady Jags rose to 2-2 in District 31-5A, 14-10 overall.
For the Lady Bobcats (1-3, 14-10), Anissa Gonzales had 20 kills while Kristian Hernandez added 15. Myranda Hinojosa (36 assists, 23 digs) and Bri Detwiler (16 assists, 32 digs) also played well for EHS, which won 25-19 and 25-20 to gain early momentum.
In other Tuesday action, North swept past Harlingen in three sets.
