Seven athletes led the charge for the crop of city kids headed to the regional track meet last week, as they were able to place within the top six of their event.
Make that six, actually, since one was Leigha Brown, the exciting Econ soph who did so in both hurdle events up in San Antonio. In fact, the long-legged leaper is the only local to advance to the state meet in Austin, after marking a 14.76 in the 100 meters, ahead of rival Zariah Noyola of Harlingen South. Noyola nipped Brown in the 300-meter event, reversing the 2-3 finish from the longer race.
Another city girl came very close to a trip to state as North soph Jenyse Vazquez - who went to the promised land in cross country as a freshman - came third in the 800. In a race that has been an Edinburg strength for years, Econ junior Joanna Rivera was a solid fifth at regionals.
The Coog program did well in San Antonio, as Cory Esparza threw 153-0 for sixth in the discus and newcomer Kory Lipscomb jumped 5-0 to fall into a group of four at that height. Another was lanky Amy Avila of EHS, whose fine performance was somewhat of a pleasant surprise considering she did not jump in several of the team's meets this season.
