It was a thriller down at Sams Stadium Friday with the North Cougars battling neck and neck with the Pace Vikings before losing 35-28 in double overtime.

Senior quarterback Joel Cuellar scored on a short touchdown run with no time remaining on the clock, and then punched in the 2-point conversion to knot the game at 28. In the first OT both teams were intercepted but Pace forged the victory in the second extra session.

The Vikes scored first on a Sam Trejo run but the Coogs answered with a 40-yard field goal from Reyes Espino. Then Cuellar found WR Michael Garcia on a 34-yard bomb to give the Coogs the lead at 10-7, followed by a 33-yard three-pointer from Espino.

Pace pushed two scores across to lead 21-13 at the half and extended to 28-13 in the third after a North turnover.

Back came the Coogs, who were 1-9 a year ago, as Rollie Borrego narrowed the gap to eight with a 5-yard run. Then came a tying drive with Cuellar coming through with zeroes on the clock.

North now looks to a game against Sharyland next week.
