History will record a ho-hum 21 point loss in the road, but the Cougars think they played pretty well last week, and the numbers bear that out.

In the 35-14 decision at Boggus Stadium, North collected four sacks, three interceptions, and held the vaunted Harlingen offense to a season low in points and yards. Nonetheless, the final was what it was, and North dropped to 1-3 in District 31-5A, 1-6 overall. Now the season is on the line against Pharr North Thursday; a loss to the 3-1, 5-2 Raiders KO's the Coogs for 2011. They have a chance of making the playoffs if they can win their last three, because 4-3 usually gets you in.

Reyes Espino had a big ball game for the Coogs filling in for injured starter Rollie Borrego, and senior Joel Cuellar had a pair of touchdown passes. But those scores came later, after a 35-0 deficit, and the fact is, while the defense seems to get better each week, the attack has had some troubles the past two games.

After the Raiders at home, it's two at Cats Stadium to finish, Harlingen South and Econ. Win Thursday and the Coogs could be the surprise of the league slate.

Speaking of the Jags, they played hard against EHS Friday before falling, 34-7, as Victor Montemayor and Favian Quintanilla each broke 100 yards on the ground for the Bobcats (2-2, 4-3). Econ (0-4, 0-7) fell before an EHS defense that is starting to pick up momentum; the ‘Cats have allowed just 27 points the past three weeks, and limited Econ to 155 yards, about half its average coming in.

Next up for the surging ‘Cats is P-SJ-A Friday, followed by Memorial at home and South on the road Nov. 4. All three opponents are in that thick know of 2-2 teams in 31-5A behind 4-0 Harlingen and 3-1 Pharr North.

Econ has to deal with Harlingen Thursday at Cats and finishes with the Raiders and Coogs. For the season, the three city schools have compiled an overall record of 5-16. EHS clinched the city championship Friday and now turns its attention to taking care of business to get into the playoffs for the third year in a row.
