With their backs against the wall, the Bobcats came out swinging, and senior Sal Martinez landed the best shots. Returning two interceptions for long scores and adding a pair of touchdown receptions, Super Sal paced the club to a 35-14 win at Harlingen South Friday night, and as a result, Edinburg returns to the postseason for the third year in a row.

EHS (6-4 overall) will travel to Bobby Morrow Stadium Friday to night to try its luck against the explosive Greyhounds (8-2). The ‘Cats had to triumph Friday to avoid a muddle in the 31-5A standings, and despite being outgained by 131 yards, they made it happen.

Martinez went 90 yards the other way with a pick to tie the game at 7 and with 1:20 to go before the half he snared another one and caught an 80-yard TD to give Coach Joey Caceres' club a 14-7 advantage. Later, hard-running Victor Montemayor bolted 29 yards for a 28-14 bulge midway through the fourth, and the Bobcats started thinking playoffs.

The two teams have met before at this stage, twice actually. EHS pounded the Greyhounds 34-13 in bi-district back in 1990, while San Benny edged the ‘Cats 13-7 two years later. In recent history, San Benito has three wins in a row, in 2005-2007, but has gone 0-5 in the playoffs since a glorious 12-1 run in 2004.

Edinburg seeks a third straight first-round win after having defeated Hanna in 2009 and Los Fresnos last year. In 2010, the ‘Cats went three-deep for the first time in a decade, vaulting from 0-2 in 31-5A into a mighty late-season rush. This fall the unit has also overcome a 0-2 beginning to get hot at the right time, led by a punishing defense and steady ground attack.

San Benito has won three in a row since a 21-14 loss to Weslaco, and has scored 143 points during that stretch.
