HARLINGEN – McAllen Thunder #9 hitter Derek Marshall with 4-for-5 with five RBI to lead the Thunder past the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings 8-5 on Monday at Harlingen Field in front of a crowd of 1,616.
The Thunder (4-2) jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the second and two in the third. With runners at second and third and one out in the second, Marshall hit a two-run single against Jason Moody, who had just replaced the injured Blake Nation (0-1). With two outs in the third, James Lilley hit a two-run home run to put the Thunder up 4-0.
The WhiteWings (4-2) started to chip away in the fourth when Welington Dotel hit a sacrifice fly against Alec Lewis (1-0). With one out in the fifth, the WhiteWings put runners at first and second, setting up an RBI-single by Antonio DeJesus. Fernandez later scored on an error to make the score 4-3.
The Thunder loaded the bases with one out in the sixth, setting up a two-run single by Marshall to make it 6-3.
The WhiteWings got those two runs back against Quinn Bright with two outs in the bottom of the inning when David Peralta hit an RBI-double and Edgar Trejo hit an RBI-single to make it 6-5.
Marshall hit an RBI-double and scored on a double by Yaibel Tamayo in the eighth to give the Thunder a pair of insurance runs.
Luis Matamoros pitched a scoreless ninth for his second save.
The WhiteWings and Thunder play game three of this four game series on Twofer Tuesday, presented by RC Cola, at 7:05 p.m. Fans can purchase two-for-one tickets, hot dogs and soda as well as half-price beer. Right-hander Andy Wells (0-0, 1.80) is expected to pitch for the WhiteWings. Gates open at 6:05.
