HARLINGEN - Wesley Dimitt and Welington Dotel combined to go 7-for-7 with seven runs scored to lead the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings past the McAllen Thunder 13-2 on Tuesday at Harlingen Field.
With the WhiteWings (5-2) leading 1-0, Dimitt and Dotel led off the second with singles. After a fly-ball advanced both runners, Jonathan Fernandez hit an RBI-groundout, David Peralta hit an RBI-double and Brandon Decker hit an RBI-single to make it 4-0.
With two outs in the third, Dimitt doubled and Dotel hit an RBI-single to make it 5-0.
Dimitt led off the sixth with a single and Dotel followed with a walk. Edgar Trejo walked to load the bases and Fernandez hit a two-run single. After an error, Decker hit an RBI-groundout to make it 8-2.
With one out in the seventh, Dimitt and Dotel led off with singles and Trejo hit his first home run. Fernandez followed with a single and Peralta hit his first home run to make it 13-2.
That was more than enough for Andy Wells (1-0), who allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits and one walk while striking out five in seven innings. He recorded 12 groundouts.
The WhiteWings got off to a fast start against the Thunder (4-3) as Leivi Ventura hit his second home run of the season to make it 1-0 against Jason Oatman (0-2) in the first.
The WhiteWings and Thunder complete this four game series on Guaranteed Win Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. If the WhiteWings don't win, everyone in the ballpark receives a free ticket to the next home game. Left-hander Chase Davenport (0-1, 6.75) is expected to pitch for the WhiteWings. Gates open at 6:05.
The WhiteWings are hosting a free youth clinic at Harlingen Field at 5:00 p.m. with WhiteWings players and coaches. All participants will receive a free ticket to the game. Gates open at 4:45.
