EDINBURG - The Edinburg Roadrunners dropped the opening game of the 2011 season with a 13-10 loss to the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings Wednesday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
The WhiteWings (1-0) got on the scoreboard first with a solo home run by Antonio De Jesus. After Leivi Ventura was hit by a pitch, Wesley Dimitt followed with a two-run home run to give RGV the 3-0 lead.
The Roadrunners (0-1) answered back in the bottom of the first. Cody McMorris reached on a fielding error and then came in to score on an RBI double by Wilmer Pino. Pino then stole third and then came into score on a throwing error by the catcher cutting the WhiteWings lead 3-2.
Edinburg took the lead in the bottom of the second after McMorris hit a two-run triple off the left field wall that allowed R.J. Harris and Gabe Memmert to score making it 4-3.
Two more home runs in the top of the third helped RGV regain the lead. Ventura hit a solo home run and Leo Delgado hit a three-run shot to right field giving the WhiteWings the 8-4 advantage.
R.J. Harris led off the bottom of the fourth with a single and then moved to third on a fielding error. After Brandon Wilkerson moved to second on a wild pitch, Pino hit a two-run single scoring Harris and Wilkerson to cut the RGV lead 8-6.
In the top of the fifth, Delgado hit a two-run home run, the fifth of the ball game for RGV, extending the WhiteWings lead 10-6.
RGV added single runs in the top of the sixth and seventh to push their lead 12-6.
Strantrel Smith hit an RBI triple in the bottom of the seventh that scored Pino from first. Smith then came into score on a wild pitch to cut RGV's lead 12-8.
Edinburg added a run in the bottom of the eighth when Wilkerson hit an RBI single to right field that scored R.J. Harris, who led off the inning with a single, which made the score 12-9.
After RGV added a run in the top of the ninth on a sacrifice fly by David Peralta, the Roadrunners answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the ninth. Osiel Flores hit an RBI double that scored Smith from first. The tying run came to the plate but Edgar Martinez recorded the final two outs of the ninth giving the WhiteWings the 13-10 victory.
Elvis Hernandez (1-0) picked up the win after pitching two innings and striking out four. Martinez got the save, his first of the season.
Edinburg and RGV will play game two of their four-game series Thursday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. Corey Goudeau (0-0) is expected to face Andrew Wells (0-0) with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
