The public is invited to attend a Memorial Day program at the Veterans War Memorial of Texas where several veterans who served their country heroically will be honored

The ceremony will take place on Monday, May 25, beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the Veterans War memorial of Texas located on 29th Street and Galveston Ave. in McAllen.

Among those speaking at the ceremony include John Ingram, Commissioner of McAllen, Lt. Col. Robert Elliot, Mayor of Mercedes, Joel Quintanilla and Commander Gary Harrell, (Ret.)

A wall will be dedicated to honor U.S. Marine Platton Sgt. William Harrell of Mercedes who is a Medal of Honor recipient for his actions during the battle of Iwo Jima during World War II. The Mayor of Mercedes, Joel Quintanilla will introduce the Harrell family and Sgt. Harrell’s son, a retired Navy Commander will be the keynote speaker.

There will be a wall dedication for SP4 Pedro Marroquin, Jr., US 55, 861 185, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 5th Battalion, 60th Infantry, 9th Infantry Division killed while on patrol in Vietnam on March 19, 1967. His parents and brother will be presented with a medal by U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar.

The ceremony will also remember Iraq and Afghanistan soldiers killed in action. Presentation of remembrance will be done by Veterans of World War II Emma Hernandez, WAVE and Lupe Hernandez.
