EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American volleyball team and head coach Brian Yale announced the match schedule for the upcoming 2011 season. Thevolleyball season this fall will be the first under Coach Yale's leadership.
The Broncs' 30-match slate in 2011 will begin on August 26th with a pair of matches at the Sam Houston State Tournament in Huntsville, TX. UTPA will face the tournament host Bearkats at 11:30 AM and square off against Louisiana Tech later that afternoon for a 4:30 PM match. UTPA will face South Texas rival Texas A&M Corpus and Rutgers during the second day of the season opening tournament.
The Broncs will participate in three additional tournaments at Baylor University (Waco, TX), Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, and Robert Morris University (Moon Township, PA)
"All in all I am pretty pleased with the type of schedule we have put together for the season," UTPA Head Coach Brian Yale said. "With such a young team, we needed to be in enough situations where if we played well we would have a chance to be successful. I think we've done that with our 2011 schedule."
The Broncs will play their first seven matches away from Edinburg before their home opener on September 6th against Big XII foe Texas Tech at the UTPA Fieldhouse with a 6:00 PM start. The Broncs have five non-conference home matches, their second with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on September 13th. Another schedule highlight is the University of New Mexico on October 23rd.
"With only two home matches in our first six weeks, the girls will certainly learn a lot about the rigors of Division-I volleyball, the travel that goes with it, and how to mix that with college academics," Coach Yale added. "Certainly there are some big names and big challenges on the list, but to be able to bring teams like Texas Tech and New Mexico to the UTPA Fieldhouse is extremely exciting."
The 10-match Great West Conference schedule for UTPA begins on September 29th as the Broncs travel to Chicago to take on Chicago State with a 7:00 p.m. start time. The Broncs first home conference match will be on October 8th against in-state rival Houston Baptist with a 2:00 p.m. start time.
