McALLEN – Join us for an evening at Quinta Mazatlan celebrating McAllen's rich history with the author of "Leading the Way: McAllen's First 100 years." Following the program the limited edition centennial book and coins will be available for sale on Thursday, Oct. 10, 6:00 p.m. at Quinta Mazatlan.

The McAllen Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with McAllen Centennial Publications, published a beautiful hard-covered keepsake historical book on McAllen's history since its incorporation in 1911. Author Mattei will take us through the significant events in McAllen from a tiny railroad town to the Valley's center for international business and commerce. Mattei states "History is really about the people who helped take part in the events, and that's what this book is all about".

Mattei is the author of Valley Places, Valley Faces and At the Crossroads: Harlingen's First 100 Year. Her third book, Leading the Way: McAllen's First 100 years was released this year. She is now working on The History of Medicine in the Rio Grande Valley.

She began writing what she knew about -fish farming- and then branched out into health columns before taking on business and travel story assignments. For the past year, she has been the editor and primary writer of the monthly Valley Business Report. She continues to freelance and writes a newspaper column. Her travel and nature stories appear in Texas Wildlife Association magazine, Texas Parks & Wildlife, and Texas Highways.

The McAllen Speaker Series takes place Thursday evenings through April 2012 and is proudly sponsored by Thurmond Eye Associates. The program fee is $2 per person and no advance reservation is required. Quinta Mazatlan, the McAllen Wing of the World Birding Center, is located at 600 Sunset in McAllen, one block south of La Plaza Mall on 10th Street.
