EDINBURG – Four Broncs reached double-digits in scoring as the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's basketball team closed the UTPA Tip-Off Classic with a 83-64 win over the Victory University Eagles on Tuesday at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
Jared Maree led the Broncs in scoring with 14 points, Brandon Provost scored 13 while Josh Cleveland and Enique Mason added 12 points each.
Provost hit a three-pointer 52 seconds into the game to propel the Broncs (2-4) on a 10-0 run, capped by a lay-up from Earl Jefferson with 16:44 remaining in the first half. Keron Jackson (16 points) scored five of the next seven points to bring the Eagles (6-3) within 12-5, but the Broncs hit 5-of-6 free throws and Ruben Cabrera connected on a jumper from the high right block to make it 19-5 with 14:07 to go.
The Broncs pushed their lead to 20 for the first time during a 9-0 run, which featured a put back slam and a spinning jump hook in the lane by Cleveland to make the score 31-11 with 8:09 remaining. Maree added a three-pointer to cap the run two and a half minutes later.
The Broncs led by as many as 28 in the first half after Maree nailed a three-pointer to make it 41-13, but the Eagles went on a 13-4 run over the final four minutes to pull within 45-26.
Jackson hit the first basket of the second half and scored six of the first 10 points, but Provost hit a three-pointer and then a deep two to fuel a 7-0 run as the Broncs pushed their lead above 20, where it remained until the final seconds of the game.
Freshman guard Josh Sanchez saw his first career action late in the game, scoring his first career points on a baseline floater that made the score 75-51 with 4:07 left.
The Broncs shot 57.4 percent from the field (31-for-54) while holding the Eagles to 37.1% shooting (23-for-62).
The Broncs start a stretch of four-straight road games on Friday at 3:00 p.m. when they face the University of South Carolina-Upstate Spartans.
