HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DR. SEUSS — The Boys & Girls Clubs of McAllen youth professionals made Reading a Seussical Celebration in Honor of Dr. Seuss’ 106th Birthday last week. The MetLife Foundation and Boys & Girls Clubs of America are celebrating Dr. Seuss’ 106th birthday with the release of Leading Youth to the Joys of Literacy: Practices for High-Yield Learning. Members are participating in a fun filled day of reading and Dr. Seuss manages to entice readers of all ages with a timeless message in his revered book, Oh, the Places You’ll Go! It has proven to be as appropriate for a five-year-old as it has for a high school graduate — and even parents. Being able to bridge this age gap and make reading fun is exactly what BGCA is aiming to do with the Leading Youth to the Joys of Literacy: Practices for High-Yield Learning best practices guide, which was released on Dr. Seuss’ 106th birthday (March 2). Like Dr. Seuss, the club professionals who have shared the practices captured in this resource guide invite you to create a world for members that serves to make reading fun. The guide, funded by the MetLife Foundation, is a compilation of high-yield-learning activities (HYLAS) targeted to increase leisure reading, motivate reluctant readers and promote positive attitudes toward learning.
