Mosey on down to Speer Memorial Library to meet Universal Music, Tejano singer Bobby Pulido.

Pulido will visit the library on Wednesday, July 17, as one of the many special guests invited to this year’s 2009 Summer Reading Program. This year’s theme appropriately named “Deep In the Heart of Texas” will begin registration on Monday, June 15, through Friday, June 19, and will conclude on Thursday, July 30. Registration forms, calendars and guidelines will be available at the library.

Among the special guests in attendance will be cowboys, ranchers, tick riders, Texas Ranger, 4-H County Extension Agent, National Butterfly Center, story tellers, and countless others.

The purpose of the summer reading program is not only for kids to have fun, but also to show them that reading is a lifelong adventure and full of excitement. The summer reading program helps young readers maintain their reading level over the summer break from school and encourages students to read as an important and fun summer activity.

Speer Memorial Library will sponsor activities such as arts & crafts, movies, game days, story hours, demonstrations, guest speakers, and much more all centered around this year’s theme. All children from Pre-K and older are welcomed to participate in all the activities scheduled for the summer.

Lisa Rivera, children’s librarian, believes that the summer reading program provides opportunities for children of all ages to enjoy reading.

“More than 200 children together read over 1,000 books last summer,” said Rivera. “This year we anticipate that the children will break that record and read at least twice as many books.”

Participating readers set goals and keep logs of the number of books they read. Speer Memorial Library will honor and recognize participants in the 2009 Summer Reading Program at the Hoedown Party on Thursday. July 30, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. where they will receive a certificate, award incentives and medals for top readers.

There will be surprises, prizes and fun galore, so don’t miss out and come join the Western Celebration Yee Haw!
