EDINBURG - In an effort to fight hunger, the Rio Grande Valley Sector Border Patrol held a “Fill the Boat” event Saturday and collected over a thousand pounds of food for the Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley.
The event involved challenging the community to bring nonperishable food items to the parking lot near the corner of 10th Street and Trenton Road in McAllen and fill a Border Patrol boat.
The Rio Grande Valley Sector held the food drive as part of the Feds Feed Families initiative. In 2010 RGV Sector employees donated more than 3,000 pounds of food. This year the sector has a goal to collect 6,000 pounds. The public’s contributions at this event will significantly help the sector reach its goal.
“I’d like to personally thank the members of the community who came out and donated food for this worthy cause, Chief Patrol Agent Rosendo Hinojosa said. “It’s great to see so many people come out and take a stand against hunger in our communities.”
