The Edinburg High School Sergeanettes kicked off their 75th Anniversary Year as a high school drill team by donating backpacks filled with school supplies to students at the newly opened Dr. Kay Teer Crawford Elementary. The new school is named after Dr. Crawford, the pioneer of dance drill teams. During her high school years in Edinburg in the 1930s, Dr. Crawford made the cheerleading squad, but 90 other girls did not. She asked the principal if she could organize them into a “spirit group” and it was from there that the Sergeanettes became her first drill team. During her lifetime, Dr. Crawford went on to organize and inspire the creation more than 15,000 drill teams around the world. The EHS Sergeanettes are celebrating their anniversary during the 2010-2011 school year. They will participate in the Oct. 2, 2010 dedication ceremony of Crawford Elementary. The Crawford family will travel from California to Edinburg for the ceremony. Pictured are the 2010-2011 Sergeanettes along with Carmel Saenz, sponsor, and Lisa Garcia, Crawford Elementary Librarian.
