The Dustin Michael Sekula Memorial Library in Edinburg will host a Valentine's Book Signing and Art Exhibit Feb. 12 at 6 p.m.

Steven Schneider, professor of English and director of New Programs and Special Projects in the College of Arts and Humanities at the University of Texas-Pan American, will read poems "About Love" from his new book of poems titled Unexpected Guests. The award winning artist Reefka Schneider, whose painting "The Expectant Father" was chosen for the cover of the book, has created a group of paintings to accompany the poems in the book that will also be on display on the evening of February 12.

Unexpected Guests by Steven Schneider is a collection of poems about love and the interior quest for a place to stand in an uncertain world. Schneider's poems weave through the windswept prairie landscape, the transnational U.S.-Mexico border, and the volatile Middle East. Written in a variety of poetic forms, including free verse, haiku, and the villanelle, Unexpected Guests will treat you to a rich and rewarding reading experience. Many of the poems in this collection have been published in prestigious international journals, including Critical Quarterly, Prairie Schooner, and Shofar. One of Schneider's poems was selected by poet laureate Ted Kooser for his American Life in Poetry column and Web site.

The book has received rave reviews from important poets and critics. Marjorie AgosĂ-n, Professor of Spanish at Wellesley College, writes that "Steven Schneider is an extraordinary poet. Each of the poems in this collection is crafted with inspiration, dedication and a skill that exemplifies the best of contemporary poetry." Daniel Tobin, Professor and Chair of Writing at Emerson College and the author of The Narrows and Where the World is Made, says "I am deeply engaged by the voice throughout this collection, at once playful and serious, attuned to the world and its occasions of wonder and loss, as well as to Schneider's desire for something more enduring than the world's ephemera."

"We are pleased to be hosting this book signing, reading and art exhibit by the Schneiders at the Dustin Michael Sekula Memorial Library. We are anticipating an evening of romance and excitement," says Letty Leija, Library Director. "Love poems, great art, and chocolate-dipped strawberries…it doesn't get any better than that."
