McALLEN – The City of Palms is slated to host the 2016 Games of Texas which will bring roughly 20,000 people to the community.

The games are sponsored by the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation and will feature 17 team and individual tournaments. The event will take place at the McAllen Convention Center, Westside park, McAllen Motocross Park, McAllen Disc Golf Courses, Sharyland High School, Brownsville Sports Park, Edinburg Water Park and McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Opening ceremony for the Games of Texas will take place July 29 at the convention center at 7 p.m.

Nancy Millar, Director of McAllen Convention & Visitors Bureau said an event like this will help with the City's public relations as the visitors will see what McAllen has to offer for everyone.

Economically Millar said the visitors to the city will spend between six and eight million dollars. It will be all new money.

“They'll be staying at hotels, eating at restaurants and buying souvenirs, filling up their cars with gas,” she said. “They're going to be spending money which helps us all.”

Heavy traffic areas will be around the convention center and the stadium. Tamarack from Bicentennial Avenue to 23rd Street will be closed.

Registration for all events ends July 25 and is open for everyone except in two events. Swimming and Track & Field events require a qualification.
